It’s hard to believe, but Kia has been around for more than 70 years. Kia got its start in December of 1944 as Kyungsung Precision Industry, but it wasn’t renamed to Kia Industries until April of 1952. In the 1960s, Kia began producing vehicles like the three-wheeler K-360 and the T-600. In 1987, Kia finally made it to the United States.
During the 1990s, Kia started to look more like the brand we know today. In 1993, Kia launched the Sportage; in 1998, it launched the Sedona; and in 2000, it launched the Optima. Notably, Kia and Hyundai merged in 1998.
During the first decade of the new millennium, Kia’s sales continued to grow. The Sedona entered the American market in 2001, Kia launched the Sorento in 2002, Kia launched the New Rio in 2005, and the Forte luxury midsize sedan entered the market in August of 2008. In September of that year, Kia introduced the funky KiaSoul that would forever change how we looked at compact models. That same year, Autocar named Kia the Car Company of the Year.
In the last decade, Kia has continued to push the envelope with new models, including luxury offerings and performance cars like the KiaStinger. Here at Crown Kia of Longview, we can’t wait to see what the future holds in store for Kia.
